‘Molokai Reef’ offers murder mystery with a local twist

Only a few works of modern fiction have placed Molokai at its center. Alan Brennert’s 2003 novel “Molokai” — set in the 19th century about a young girl ripped from her Honolulu family and taken to Kalaupapa’s Hansen’s disease settlement — has been a bestseller and a favorite among book clubs. In 2007 Kirby Wright published “Molokai Nui Ahina, Summers on the Lonely Isle,” a memoir of childhood summers spent on the East End with his tutu.
